A few weeks ago we took part in #SocialSaturday to promote social enterprise and raise awareness about the benefits of buying social. We decided to carry out our campaign on a social media platform that we hadn’t touched on much before; Tumblr. Tumblr is primarily a blogging format and serves a niche market of areas with strong following, mainly media and entertainment based.

However, we didn’t choose Tumblr because of the market it could reach. We chose Tumblr because of the features of the software. Tumblr enables you to open a page where people can ask anonymous and identified questions. It also allows you to use tags to separate up its main feed and is mobile optimised. It is also designed flexibly around media in particular and shows off photos and videos as nicely as text. It has many themes you can customise and is perfect for one off events. It also has a really intuitive scheduling tool which is like a cross between Buffer and Hoostsuite.

There were a few tips we found when using it;

  • Get a good URL (ours was cosmicethicalit.tumblr.com)
  • Make sure your scheduled posts are set to the correct timezone (ours nearly didn’t go out because our account was set to Eastern Standard Time by standard)
  • Create a mixture of content (we mixed video and text but questions, polls, pictures and audio are all supported)
  • Link off to other sources to enrich your content (we embedded youtube videos)
  • Use it as an alternate location to your website (somewhere else for clients to gain insight from you)

One of the key points about Tumblr is that it is visually focussed so high quality images are key and it’s really easy to share content from Tumblr. Another advantage is the different post types;

In addition to this, some of the post types have more options, for example, an image post can be arranged in several different ways depending on how many photos you have.

I think one of my favourite things about Tumblr is it’s usability. It has a really good user experience for any viewing the blogs and for anyone posting their own blog. There are many different free and paid for themes available and it’s such a quick method of posting.
