Digital Skills Support in Torquay Helps Mandy Grow Her Community Business

Through the Restart Scheme, Cosmic and Seetec helped Mandy, the independent business owner behind Milly Molly Mandy, build her digital skills and grow her confidence.

With practical guidance from Nick Ferguson at Cosmic and Amber at Seetec, Mandy learned how to use digital tools to manage her business, reach more people and support her local community.

Building digital confidence one step at a time

When Mandy first started receiving support, technology could sometimes feel overwhelming.

Together, Nick and Amber helped her take manageable steps and build confidence at her own pace. The support focused on tools that could make a real difference to her everyday work.

Mandy developed her skills in:

  • Microsoft 365
  • Canva
  • Microsoft Forms
  • Excel
  • OneDrive
  • LinkedIn
  • Google Business Profile
  • Facebook
  • Artificial intelligence tools

Rather than learning technology for its own sake, Mandy used each tool to solve practical business challenges.

She improved her systems, strengthened her marketing and developed a clearer online presence. She also began preparing to deliver sessions independently.

Creating an inclusive space in Torquay

Milly Molly Mandy is an inclusive creative space in Torquay that brings people together through craft, connection and wellbeing.

The business supports a wide range of people, including vulnerable community members, children with learning difficulties and members of the LGBTQ+ community.

Mandy has created a welcoming environment where people can feel included, express themselves and build meaningful connections.

Her work is making a positive social impact across Torquay and the surrounding area.

Recognising Mandy’s community impact

Nick and Amber were so impressed by Mandy’s commitment to her community that they nominated her for a British Citizen Award.

Her nomination was successful, and Mandy was invited to attend an award ceremony at the House of Lords on Thursday 23 July 2026.

Nick, Amber and Mandy travelled to London the day before the ceremony and stayed in Westminster.

At the event, hosted by journalist and presenter Matt Allwright, medallists from across the UK were recognised for their outstanding contributions to their communities. Mandy attended as a guest of Lord Mott OBE.

After the ceremony, guests joined a reception overlooking the River Thames. Mandy, Nick and Amber then returned to Devon, proud to celebrate her well-deserved achievement.

Practical support that creates lasting change

Nick Ferguson, Digital Skills Trainer and Team Leader at Cosmic, said:

“Seeing Mandy recognised at the House of Lords was an incredibly proud moment. Her commitment to supporting others, combined with her willingness to embrace new digital skills, has helped her business thrive and increased her impact within the community.”

Mandy Parnell BCAc said:

“The support from Cosmic has been so helpful. I now feel much more confident using digital tools and no longer feel overwhelmed by technology. Everyone needs a Cosmic Nick in their life. He has given me so much confidence and stopped me from throwing my laptop out of the window!”

The value of person-centred digital support

Mandy’s story shows what can happen when digital support starts with the person, not the technology.

The partnership between Cosmic and Seetec gave Mandy the time, encouragement and practical guidance she needed to overcome barriers and build lasting confidence.

Her new skills are helping her manage her business more effectively, connect with a wider audience and continue creating positive change in her community.
